Root Beer Candy and Other Miracles

Written by Shari Green.
Published in 2016 by Pajama Press.

Eleven-year-old Bailey longs for miracles. She and her younger brother are spending a month on Arbutus Island with a spoon-stealing grandmother they haven’t previously met while their parents are at Marriage Repair camp. As Bailey’s new friend Daniel, a boy with cystic fibrosis, demonstrates his capacity to live in the present, Bailey learns to think about things she can change, and things she can’t, in a more mature and positive way. Family secrets, as well as unique and complex characterizations, make this a light-hearted yet evocative page-turner.

i thought it was a good book, and it was really interesting. i didn’t mind that it was written in verse, though some people may find it hard to read. i thought that after a while it just felt regular to read. and i would recommend this book and it was really good like you never want to put it down.

This is a beautifully written novel in verse. Root Beer Candy and Other Miracles tackles some serious problems common among young people today. Told in verse, this novel describes the journey of a girl faced with heartbreak—her parents are likely getting divorced and her family is falling apart. Unfortunately, not everything can be fixed, but sharing a problem with someone who loves her can make it easier to bear. I was impressed at how the author developed such memorable characters using free verse. The plot was compelling and the pacing of the story was swift and effortless. Darlene

I really liked the story, and how it had to do with God, and how he can do anything. I liked the characters a alot too, and the way it was printed onto paper. A great book for all ages. I rate it 8 out of 10
