Hiawatha and the Peacemaker

Written by Robbie Robertson.
Published in 2015 by Harry N. Abrams.

Hiawatha was a strong and articulate Mohawk who was chosen to translate the Peacemaker’s message of unity for the five warring Iroquois nations during the 14th century. This message not only succeeded in uniting the tribes but also forever changed how the Iroquois governed themselves—a blueprint for democracy that would later inspire the authors of the U.S. Constitution.

I think that this book is very sad at first. I like that at the end all of the nations chose to join together and make peace:)

I liked this book because it gave some history about the different tribes. I liked that the Peacemaker wanted to stop the war between tribes. I remembered when they got all together, they buried their weapons and found peace.

    I give it 3 stars.

I would recommend this to people who would like to learn about first nations.

Hiawatha and the Peacemaker is a really good book. It teaches us many things, and we can learn from it. There are lessons in history, because the book is about a real story, and there are also morals you can learn.
I think there are many purposes of the book, and they have all been achieved. Robbie Robertson said the main purpose of the book was to tell people the true story of Hiawatha and the Peacemaker, and I think he has done that well. The book also teaches us about Canada’s history, and how the Haudenosaunee (people of the longhouse) Treaty happened. The other main purpose I can see is to teach lessons, peace is always better than war, and that when you forgive, your heart can be set free, but there are still other things you can learn from the book. I also learned about the First Nations and their beliefs, because the Peacemaker gets chopped of a tree, to prove that the nations must live in peace. Then, the next day, he is alive and well, even though he fell into the river the day before, and when he sings a song, he can stop a whole army of warriors!! The Peacemaker is probably a supernatural, and this shows the culture and thinking of the First Nations. The writing style is clear, effective, and easy to understand, and it conveys the message of the book well.
I would definitely recommend this book to other readers.

I really liked the book “Hiawatha and the Peacemaker”. It is about a Mohawk warrior who meets a Peacemaker. The Peacemaker didn’t want there to be war, but he was not a gifted speaker. When Hiawatha agreed, the Peacemaker and Hiawatha went to all of the tribes, telling them to make peace, not war. The tribes agreed. I would recommend it to grades 4/5.

Hiawatha is a great book about the Iroquois and how Hiawatha united the five tribes. It teaches you a lot about how the Iroquois formed. I think that the purpose of the book has been achieved to tell the true story of Hiawatha and the Peacemaker. This book also teaches us that peace among people is always better than conflict and war. This can raise a lot of topics for discussion because people can debate whether this is the real story of Hiawatha, of if there is another story that is the real one. The world right now is a very violent one. There were two world wars and a lot n of smaller ones and they are very bad. This book talks about peace and the harm of war so the world can be better. There is no facts or evidence that is omitted, only his interpretation of what happened. The data in this book to me is accurate and the same information that Robbie Robertson put into his book can be interpreted differently. The writing style of Hiawatha is clear, effective and easy to understand. The book convinces me and now, I think that this is the real way that Hiawatha united the five tribes.
This is a great book for all ages and I would recommend this book to everyone.

I didn’t really like this story. I was not intrigued or captivated by the story or the subject.

  16. Ecole Mallaig School

I loved how accurately the story was told in relation to the actual Iroquois story. The pictures and words worked perfectly together. Having a Robbie Robertson song at the end was a lovely treat.
